The NACS / J1772 confusion, explained
In 2022, Tesla opened its proprietary charging connector design to the world, calling it NACS (North American Charging Standard). By 2023, every major automaker — Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Rivian, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota, Honda — had committed to switching from J1772 to NACS for their 2025+ model-year vehicles. By 2026, most new EVs sold in the U.S. use NACS.
But the public charging infrastructure hasn't caught up. As of mid-2026, roughly 70% of public Level 2 chargers in the U.S. are still J1772, and only ~30% are NACS (mostly Tesla Wall Connectors at hotels, workplaces, and Airbnb rentals). The Tesla Supercharger network — which uses NACS — has been opened to non-Tesla EVs, but coverage is still patchy in rural areas.
The result: every EV owner in 2026 needs at least one adapter. The direction depends on what you drive:
- If you drive a non-Tesla EV (Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV9, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevy Equinox EV, etc.): you need a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter to use Tesla Wall Connectors at hotels and Tesla Destination Chargers.
