What's in the box
Most portable power stations ship with the same basic set of accessories:
- The power station unit itself
- AC wall charger (usually a brick-style adapter with a NEMA 5-15 plug)
- Car charging cable (12V cigarette lighter adapter)
- MC4 to XT60/Anderson adapter cable (for solar panel input)
- User manual and warranty card
Some manufacturers (EcoFlow, Jackery) include a basic carrying case; others (Bluetti, Anker) sell it separately. Solar panels are almost always sold separately — see our portable solar panel guide.
Step 1: Inspect for shipping damage
Before powering on, inspect the unit for any visible damage:
- Dents or cracks in the case
- Loose or rattling internal components (gently shake the unit)
- Damage to any ports or connectors
- Burn marks or unusual odors (rare but serious — contact manufacturer immediately)
If you find damage, photograph it and contact the manufacturer immediately. Most major brands (EcoFlow, Jackery, Bluetti, Anker) have responsive customer service for shipping damage claims.
Step 2: First charge
Before first use, fully charge the unit using the included AC wall charger. This initial charge:
- Calibrates the battery management system (BMS) to your unit's actual capacity
- Conditions the LFP cells for optimal long-term performance
- Verifies the unit is functioning correctly
Expect the first charge to take longer than subsequent charges — typically 1–2 hours longer than the rated recharge time. The unit is fully charged when all battery indicator LEDs are solid (not blinking).
Step 3: Update firmware (if applicable)
EcoFlow, Jackery, Bluetti, and Anker all have mobile apps that connect to your power station via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. After the first charge:
- Download the manufacturer's app (EcoFlow app, Jackery app, Bluetti app, Anker app)
- Pair your power station with the app
- Check for firmware updates — install any available
- Configure settings: max charge rate, max discharge rate, AC auto-off timeout, etc.
Firmware updates can improve charging speed, fix bugs, and add features. Worth doing before you actually need the unit.
Step 4: Pair with a solar panel (optional)
If you bought a portable solar panel for off-grid charging:
- Verify the solar panel's connector is compatible (most use MC4; most power stations accept XT60 or Anderson)
- Use the included adapter cable to connect panel to power station
- Position the panel facing south (in the Northern Hemisphere) at a 30–45° angle
- Verify the power station shows solar input (most display incoming watts on the LCD or app)
Most power stations have built-in MPPT charge controllers, so you can connect solar panels directly without any external controller. Check your unit's spec sheet to confirm.
Step 5: Practice using it
Before you actually need the power station in an emergency, practice using it:
- Plug in your fridge and run it for 1 hour — verify the power station handles the surge
- Plug in your phone and laptop — verify USB and AC outlets work
- Test the LED flashlight (most units have one built in)
- Try the solar panel — verify it actually charges the unit
- Run the unit down to 20% and recharge — verify the cycle works end-to-end
This sounds obvious, but you'd be amazed how many homeowners buy a power station, leave it in the box for 2 years, then discover during an outage that the firmware is buggy or the solar panel connector is incompatible.
Safety best practices
- Never disassemble the unit. LFP cells are safe, but the BMS and inverter contain hazardous voltage even when "off."
- Keep away from water. Most units are IP20 rated (not water-resistant). Outdoor use requires a weatherproof enclosure.
- Don't exceed the rated output. If your unit is 1,800W continuous, don't plug in a 2,000W heater — the BMS will trip, but repeated trips degrade the unit.
- Store at 50–80% charge for long-term storage. Storing at 0% or 100% for months degrades LFP cells faster than mid-charge storage.
- Recharge every 6 months during storage. Even when "off," the BMS draws a small current. After 6–12 months of storage, the unit may self-discharge to 0%.
- Use only manufacturer-approved accessories. Third-party AC adapters or solar cables can damage the unit and void the warranty.
