What the Sense Energy Monitor does

The Sense Energy Monitor is a device that installs in your main electrical panel and uses machine learning to identify every appliance in your home by its unique electrical signature. After a few weeks of training, the Sense app can tell you exactly how much power your fridge, dryer, well pump, EV charger, and dozens of other devices are using — without any additional sensors.

This guide walks through installation, the initial training period, and how to actually use the data Sense provides to reduce your electricity bill.

Step 1: Installation (or hire an electrician)

The Sense installs inside your main electrical panel. The two main current transformers (CTs) clip around the main service conductors — the two thick wires that bring power from the utility into your panel. The solar version includes two additional CTs for tracking solar generation. The Sense unit itself mounts inside or outside the panel (depending on panel type) and connects to your home Wi-Fi.

Sense officially recommends installation by a licensed electrician. The installation itself is straightforward (15–30 minutes for a licensed electrician), but working inside an energized electrical panel is genuinely dangerous for non-professionals.

Step 2: The training period (be patient)

Sense's machine learning needs to see each appliance run multiple times before it can identify it reliably. The training timeline is roughly:

  • Week 1: Sense detects total home power use and a few obvious devices (HVAC, water heater, fridge)
  • Weeks 2–4: Sense detects most major appliances (dryer, oven, microwave, dishwasher)
  • Months 2–3: Sense detects smaller devices (lights, TVs, computers) — these are harder because their signatures are less distinctive
  • Ongoing: Sense continues to learn as new devices are added or old ones change

Don't be discouraged if Sense doesn't detect everything in the first week. The detection improves dramatically over the first 30 days.

Step 3: Verify and name detected devices

As Sense detects devices, it gives them generic names like "Heat 1", "Motor 2", "Always On". Rename them to actual appliance names ("Furnace blower", "Well pump", "Phantom loads") so the data is useful. For each detected device, verify the detection is correct by turning the device on and watching Sense confirm the detection in real time.

Step 4: Use the data — 5 high-value insights

Insight 1: Identify phantom loads

The "Always On" category in Sense shows the cumulative power draw of devices that never turn off — TV entertainment centers, cable boxes, smart speakers, phone chargers, etc. Most homes have 50–150W of phantom loads, costing $50–$200 per year. Plug these into smart plugs (TP-Link Kasa or Emporia) and schedule them to turn off when not in use.

Insight 2: Catch malfunctioning appliances

A fridge that used to draw 150W but now draws 300W has a failing compressor. A well pump that runs 4 hours per day instead of 1 hour has a leak. Sense will alert you to these anomalies — often weeks before you'd notice the higher utility bill.

Insight 3: Validate battery sizing

If your utility has TOU rates, Sense's "Time of Use" view shows exactly when you're using power and how much it costs. Shift discretionary loads (dishwasher, laundry, EV charging) to off-peak hours to save 10–30% on electricity.
