What is a transfer switch?

A transfer switch is an electrical device that safely connects a portable generator or battery backup to your home's electrical panel — without backfeeding power to the utility grid (which can kill lineworkers). For any whole-home or partial-home backup setup using a portable source, a transfer switch is non-negotiable.

This guide covers the most common type: a manual transfer switch installed alongside your main electrical panel, which lets you select which household circuits receive backup power during an outage.

Types of transfer switches

  1. Manual transfer switch (most common for portable generators): A separate box with toggle switches — you manually flip circuits from "LINE" (utility) to "GEN" (generator) during an outage. Most popular: Reliance Controls Pro/Tran series.
  2. Automatic transfer switch (ATS): Detects outages automatically and switches to backup power within milliseconds. Used with permanent standby generators and most home battery systems (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, etc.).
  3. Generator interlock kit: A mechanical sliding plate that prevents the main breaker and generator breaker from being on simultaneously. Cheapest option but only allows whole-panel backup (no circuit selection). Must be listed for your specific panel model.

What your electrician will do

Step 1: Choose the right transfer switch

Transfer switches are rated by amperage (30A, 50A, 60A) and number of circuits (6, 8, 10, 12). For a typical portable generator (7,500W running, 9,000W surge), a 30A 6-circuit switch is standard. For larger generators (15,000W+), 50A 10-circuit switches are typical.

Step 2: Mount the transfer switch

The transfer switch mounts on the wall next to your main electrical panel (within 18 inches typically). It's secured with lag bolts into wall studs.

Step 3: Connect the transfer switch to the main panel

For each circuit you want to back up, the electrician:

  1. Turns off the main breaker (kills power to the entire panel)
  2. Removes the circuit wire from the existing breaker
  3. Connects that wire to the transfer switch's "LINE" side
  4. Runs a new wire from the transfer switch's "GEN" side back to a new breaker in the main panel
  5. Connects the transfer switch's common output to the original breaker location

This creates a "Y" path: each backed-up circuit can receive power from either the utility (LINE) or the generator (GEN), with the transfer switch physically preventing both from being connected simultaneously.

Step 4: Install the power inlet box

A power inlet box mounts on the exterior of your home (where you'll plug in the generator). It's a weatherproof receptacle that connects to the transfer switch via conduit. The most common is a 30A 120/240V twist-lock receptacle.

Step 5: Test the system

With the installation complete, your electrician should:

  1. Plug in the generator and start it
  2. Flip each transfer switch toggle from LINE to GEN, one at a time
  3. Verify each circuit receives power from the generator
  4. Verify the utility main breaker is OFF and no backfeeding occurs
  5. Flip all toggles back to LINE and verify utility power resumes

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Don't oversize the backed-up circuits. A 7,500W generator can only run 2–3 high-draw circuits at once. Pick your essential loads carefully.
  2. Don't forget the well pump. Well pumps have high surge current (4,000–6,000W for 2 seconds). Make sure your generator and transfer switch can handle it.
  3. Don't skip the inlet box. Running a generator cord through an open window is a fire hazard and violates code. Install the inlet box properly.
  4. Don't use extension cords as a permanent solution. If you're backing up more than 2 circuits, install a transfer switch — it's safer and code-compliant.
