The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Bluetti AC300 expansion batteries manufactured between March and August 2023. The recall affects approximately 4,200 units sold through Amazon, Bluetti's direct website, and authorized retailers.
What's wrong with the affected units
The defect is in the cell-balancing firmware that manages the LFP battery cells. Under specific charging conditions, the firmware can fail to properly balance individual cell voltages, leading to over-discharge of one or more cells. This causes premature capacity degradation and, in rare cases, can trigger the battery management system to disable the unit entirely.
No fire, thermal runaway, or safety incidents have been reported. This is a performance and longevity defect, not a safety defect. Bluetti is handling the recall proactively rather than waiting for a regulatory mandate.
Which units are affected
Only Bluetti AC300 expansion batteries (model number AC300, sold separately from the B300 main unit) manufactured between March 1, 2023 and August 31, 2023 are affected. The manufacture date is printed on the serial number label on the bottom of the unit. To check your unit:
- Locate the serial number label on the bottom of the AC300 expansion battery
- Look for the 4-digit manufacture date code (format MMYY, e.g., "0423" = April 2023)
- If your date code is between "0323" and "0823" inclusive, your unit is affected
- Verify at the Bluetti recall portal: bluettipower.com/recalls (link opens external site)
What Bluetti is offering
Affected units qualify for two remedies, at the owner's choice:
- Free firmware update — Bluetti will ship a USB update tool and instructions to flash the corrected firmware. Takes about 30 minutes. The unit must be returned to Bluetti's service center if you can't perform the update yourself.
- 2-year warranty extension — Regardless of which remedy you choose, Bluetti is extending the warranty on affected units by 2 years. Original 5-year warranty becomes 7 years.
Which Bluetti products are NOT affected
This recall does NOT affect:
- Bluetti AC180 (any production date)
- Bluetti AC200L (any production date)
- Bluetti AC300 main unit (B300) — only the expansion battery is affected
- Bluetti AC300 expansion batteries manufactured before March 2023 or after August 2023
- Any 2024 or newer Bluetti product
If you own a Bluetti AC180, AC200L, or any 2024+ Bluetti product, your unit is unaffected and no action is needed. See our best portable power stations guide for our current Bluetti recommendations — the AC180 remains a top pick.
