Why a state-by-state directory?
The U.S. home storage market is fragmented. Installer availability, state incentive programs, utility rate structures, and net metering rules vary dramatically by state — what's an excellent deal in California might be marginal in Indiana. A national directory wouldn't be useful without state-specific context.
Each state page below includes:
- State-specific incentive summary — the rebate programs, tax credits, and utility programs you should know about before getting quotes
- Active installer list — national and local installer brands confirmed to be operating in the state as of May 2026
- Pricing benchmarks — typical installed costs for the four most common battery systems in that state
- Quote-comparison tips — state-specific guidance on getting the best deal

Top states for home battery economics in 2026
Based on our Q1 2026 analysis, the top five states for home battery ROI are:
- California — SGIP rebate (up to $1.00/Wh equity tier) + high TOU spread + frequent outages = payback in 3–5 years.
- Hawaii — Highest electricity rates in U.S. + Battery Bonus rebate + mature installer market.
- Massachusetts — ConnectedSolutions performance payments ($1,500/yr for 5 yrs) + Eversource TOU rates.
- New York — NYSERDA storage incentive + Con Ed TOU rates + comprehensive state solar policy.
- Vermont — Green Mountain Power's BYOD battery program + Resilient Home program. Smallest market but most aggressive utility support.
At the other end of the spectrum, states with limited storage economics include West Virginia, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Mississippi — these markets lack both state incentives and frequent outage events, making pure ROI math unfavorable. Homeowners in these states are better off considering V2H or treating a home battery as an insurance product rather than an investment.
